The Business of Rugby campaign concludes with the final content release examining the importance of ‘Process’

The fourth and final chapter of the Business of Rugby campaign, released today, focuses on how significant it is to implement the right processes across the Premiership Rugby clubs in order to maximise the team performance on matchday.

The Business of Rugby campaign concludes with the final content release examining the importance of ‘Process’
As part of this chapter, Ricoh visited Gloucester Rugby’s training ground at Hartpury College and spoke to the club’s Performance Chef, Will Carvalho and Kit Manager, Shaun Bullock to understand how they approach their respective roles and what processes they have put in place to form part of the players’ daily routine. From making sure that the players have access to the right type and amount of nutrition based on their workloads, to having the kit ready for every training session, each member of the behind-the-scenes team at Gloucester Rugby plays a vital role in creating processes that will ultimately lead to success.
Gloucester Rugby’s scrum-half Callum Braley commented: ‘We can train as much as we like throughout the week, but if we’re not going to deliver what we practiced then it’s kind of pointless… We talk a lot about trust – trust in the process and trusting each other.’

A growing number of Premiership Rugby clubs are also breaking processes down to the level of the individual.  Player development specialists are now used to giving each member of a squad a plan to make the best of themselves. This extends beyond playing performance – Wasps players, for example, are encouraged to use their time away from training productively to build qualifications, professional networks and interests outside of rugby.
‘Wasps believe encouraging and supporting players’ personal development off the rugby field is a key component to providing a good environment that supports performance,’  said Chris Bell, Head of Partnership Delivery and Player Personal Development at Wasps. ‘Having an outside influence and career goal helps focus the mind away from rugby, providing experiences and developing attributes that will support the transition into a further career after professional rugby.’
The Business of Rugby campaign explores what it takes for Premiership Rugby clubs to generate lasting success, on and off the pitch. A report and video series made up of four chapters focusing on the four factors that Ricoh believe are essential to developing a winning strategy: people, place, process, and technology, have been released throughout the 2018/19 Gallagher Premiership Rugby season with each chapter to provide fascinating insights and behind-the-scenes access to the Premiership Rugby clubs.
