Ricoh launches new Laws film as part of Rugby Change Series

Global technology company, Ricoh has today launched the third video in their Rugby Change Series. The latest video, Laws, focuses on how changes to rugby laws have affected the game of rugby, the reasoning behind those changes and which have had the greatest impact; forcing teams to re-think and adapt their game strategies.

The video also provides deeper insight into the men and women implementing and enforcing those changes; the referees.

The modern era has brought with it the introduction of professional referees, allowing match day officials to spend more time liaising and supporting Premiership clubs, as well as ensuring they have the resources and capabilities to deal with the physical and mental requirements of the game; from vigorous training and fitness regimes to psychotherapy sessions.

There is no doubt that advancing technology has greatly impacted the game over recent years, offering real time data and instant replays to coaches, fans and referees.
Ricoh’s third video investigates how the introduction of the TMO has changed the game and if it has, improved it; by allowing referees to make better, informed and more accurate decisions.

Chas Moloney, Marketing Director for Ricoh UK & Ireland, commented: “At a time when changes to rugby laws are frequently in the headlines, we, at Ricoh are incredibly excited to give fans a real insight into why these changes have been implemented and how they have impacted the game. Technology has played a vital role in the evolution of rugby and it is so important that the sport continues to embrace technology and look for new ways to improve the game for players, referees and fans alike.”

Ben Kay, Ricoh ambassador, added “It’s really encouraging to see Ricoh offering fans a different perspective on the game and highlighting just what it takes to be a professional referee in the modern era. The TMO has greatly impacted how referees make decisions and has also enhanced the fans involvement in those decisions. Although there has been a lot of debate, primarily around how much the TMO should be used, we can’t deny that it has provided us with invaluable game play information, which will, hopefully, continue to make the game safer, fairer but just as exciting.”
